The name “Dukes” and its relationship to Cumberland
Cumberland was originally incorporated as a township in 1800 as part of
Russell County. It took its name from
Ernest Augustus I of Hanover,
Duke of Cumberland.
Guidelines to Consider When Creating a Logo
The logo/brand should represent the entire experience. It is what you stand for, promises you make, and the personality that you want to convey. While it includes logo, colour and perhaps even a slogan, those are only the creative elements and you will want to ensure that your brand lives in every day-to-day interaction.
- the images Cumberland Dukes Minor Hockey Association (CDMHA) convey;
- the messages delivered in Website, materials etc;
- People's opinion of us VS. other hockey associations.
The logo should be STRONG, UNIQUE and something ALL MEMBERS CAN IDENTIFY WITH. The easiest way is to try and identify it as a person with a distinct personality. Should be able to describe itself and convey the traits CDMHA holds to heart.
Some other pointers:
- simple is sometimes better (complex logo hard to reproduce/difficult to remember);
- don't use clipart - image probably isn't licensed for use as a logo, or if it is, used by several other people;
- size matters (needs to reproduce at a variety of different sizes - i.e. pin, key chain, poster);
- Aspect ratio (relationship between height and width of logo);
- if logo has iconic and a textual treatment (it's best to have these elements as separate pieces of artwork - this way you can use either the text, the logo or both and all will stand up);
- logo is for your audience (not your personal taste);
- logo needs to have instant impact (if you have to guess -no good!);
- Looks good in colour, black and white, different sizes etc;
- A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic and simple in form, and it conveys your intended message;
In five words:
- Simple;
- Memorable;
- Timeless;
- Versatile; and
- Appropriate
