Congratulations to the Jr. Grads Major Atom B who are tournament champions at the North York Knights Challenge. The weekend of January 30-31, the Major Atom B Grads White team travelled to Toronto to compete in the North York Knights Challenge. The tournament started off with the Grads facing the Burlington Bulldogs, a team that the Grads had lost the gold medal to in Lake Placid only a few short months earlier. The game went back and forth but in the end Burlington edged out the Grads in
the dying seconds. During the hand-shake, one of their coaches made a comment about seeing us in the finals. Little did he know that his prediction would come true.
The Grads advanced through the round robin and elimination rounds to once again face Burlington in the Gold medal game. The game was a hard fought battle with goals being exchanged throughout regulation time. At the final buzzer the teams were locked at 5 apiece. Overtime ran 4 vs 4 for four minutes, 3 vs 3 for four minutes, and 2 vs 2 until a winner was crowned. The overtime periods were fast paced, nail biting exchanges of rushes, odd-man breakaways, spectacular saves and near misses. Well into the 2 vs 2 round a turnover by Burlington allowed the Grads to gain control and race down the ice on a breakaway, finding the back of the net and securing the Gold. Helmets, gloves, and sticks littered the ice as the Major Atom B White Grads team won their second Gold Medal of the season, bringing tournament wins to 2 Golds and 2 Silvers.
Congratulations to the players and a huge thank-you to the supporting cast of parents and volunteer helpers on the team for making it a success both on and off the ice.
